History
Baton Rouge High School’s radio program was originally envisioned by John Dobbs, a teacher at the iconic capital city school, who wanted to establish a fully-functional educational radio station and Radio Training Program to serve Baton Rouge and the surrounding communities. With principal Lee Faucette in agreement, Dobbs worked tirelessly to secure the license, equipment, and facilities necessary to make his vision a reality. On September 8th of 1977, WBRH 90.3FM officially signed on the air as Baton Rouge’s first listener-supported public radio station.
In 1993, Baton Rouge Magnet High School’s Radio Training Program grew stronger when the license and equipment for 1260AM was donated to the school. The new AM station, KBRH, powered up on September 10th, making Baton Rouge Magnet High School the only high school in the country to operate two fully licensed radio stations.
Today WBRH programming consists of jazz and roots music while KBRH airs a variety of soul and rhythm & blues. Both stations proudly spotlight Louisiana musicians across a variety of genres. The school’s Radio Training Program provides students with a learning environment that enables aspiring broadcasters to acquire and develop the skills necessary to work professionally in the broadcast industry. Many graduates have gone on to have successful careers in the field, including Senior Vice President of Programming for iHeartmedia Louisiana, Bob Murphy, former Dean of the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication, Martin Johnson, and legendary Houston hip-hop DJ, Cat Daddy.
The program’s curriculum is continuously refined to best address the needs of young broadcasters in the 21st century. Students produce live broadcasts, news, sports, podcasts and a variety of engaging productions each school day. WBRH/KBRH programs have earned awards and accolades from the Louisiana Music Commission, the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Service, The John Drury Awards, among other prestigious organizations.
