Artist Spotlight: Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole’s warm baritone voice and sophisticated pop sound played a key role in music from the 1940s-60s. Cole was one of the first Black TV hosts, breaking barriers to bring audiences together in a celebration of music. Hear the story of Nat King Cole on this week’s episode of The Buffet. 1. I happened to catch KBRH near Austin, TX the past couple of nights.I didn’t know about the station but found it while trying out a new antenna. It was mostly a weak signal, but it would come and go every few minutes to maybe 10 minutes between 9 and midnight. Koko Taylor is loud and clear right now. I love the blues music! I wish there were more stations like this. There’s good music on the radio here in Austin, but not so much elsewhere. I’ll listen online, but I’m a radio operator, so of course I have to try the DX signal first.

  2. 2/27/26: Pacific Northwest stands up! Paul Revere Ride Your Pony and The Kingsmen Louie, Louie. Both groups recorded Louie Louie in the same studio one day apart. Out here the Paul Revere version was considered better: “Grab your woman, it’s Louie Louie time!” The two main rock stations would only play or the other and would monitor when one was on the opposing station so they could blast their version on top of it…. sometimes playing them numerous times in a row. I was lucky enough to dance to both and Paul Revere’s version would turn into an extended groove that would wear out The Dead, lol.

Love you Leah Smith you Mo Better!

    1. I’ve done a show on “river” songs, but not specifically on the Mississippi river. Great idea! I’ll work something up for January. Thanks for listening, Greg!

  3. who did Good Old Days at 15:48 on the AM, it only says “Live” such a pretty song I need to send it to some newly married kids I know and tell them to play it every year on their anniversary no exceptions

    1. Hey, Johnny & Jackey! The song “Good Old Days” is by Louisiana native Eugene Hideaway Bridges. There’s a studio version on his album “Roots & Vines”. The version you heard was from his album “Live in Tallahassee”. I hope that helps, and thanks for listening!

  4. I’m trying to find a song y’all played on 90.3FM on Tuesday night, October 20, 2025.
I’ve looked through the “past songs” lists for the song I heard. And none of the songs listed at the time that I was listening are the song. It was at or around ~7:53—7:58pm (~19:55). I tried Shazam-ing the song and it returned no result.
It had bass, piano, drums, and I think soprano sax. It was in a fast 6/8, or maybe a 12/8 but didn’t feel like a blues. The head was quirky. There was a sax solo followed by a piano solo that was absolutely killer.
Please help me find this song, thanks so much!

    1. Thanks for listening, Scott! Can you confirm that you heard it this past Tuesday night, October 21st at 19:55 central time? The closest that we came up with is “Bheki Mseleku – Imbali” However, that is listed on the Past Songs.

In the meantime, we’re running at slightly less power to make the equipment happy and keep the music on the air.
